Food addictions

Having eczema and being on the GAPS diet has made me very aware of the food addictions many people around me have. Once people hear that we can’t eat breads or noodles or rice, they tend to freak out. :D

They will invariably say, “Oh! I can’t live without my cake/bread/carbs/etc”. According to Dr Natasha Campbell-McBride, this is a clear indication that there is a yeast overgrowth in the body system, specifically the gut. The yeast is telling you to feed it and that is what causes the cravings.

Both dd and I had similar cravings before we started the GAPS Diet. But after a few months on GAPS, the cravings have largely disappeared. I remember distinctly eyeing the bunch of bananas on the kitchen table and having a conversation with myself about eating it in the beginning. It was hard to walk away from it! I craved even apples, a fruit I used to not want to have anything to do with! That’s how badly the yeast wanted sugar.

But now, it isn’t as bad. Once in a while it rears its ugly head but sadly what I crave most is the creamy taste of milk! Weak coffee is allowed on full GAPS but with no milk. Ah! But it is coffee with milk that I crave :)

Many times people who can’t lose weight say they can’t help it and now, knowing what I know, I guess it is true. Cravings can get bad. You become addicted to the food, you just need it. I used to need to snack and eat supper, preferably something carb-based.

GAPS does help with food cravings if you stick to it and not cheat. Once you cheat, you allow the bad guys ammunition all over again. Which means you have to start from square one. You would have wasted all that effort. That is what keeps me going when the days are bad and no apparent benefits are seen.

But once you starve and kill the yeast in you, all the cravings will go away and suddenly you have willpower! As always however, the beginning is always the toughest. But is worth it as you see that food no longer has power over you and you begin to shed unwanted and unhealthy weight.

No, I don’t need a larger house

Recently I was at a friend’s huge 4 storey brand new house – with garden and skylights and all. It was a lovely place. Now a few months before that, we had attempted to go house hunting since the children are physically growing up and taking up more space than they were a few years ago. Squeezing 4 and soon 5 girls into one bedroom was getting challenging especially since we can’t do bunk beds due to dust allergies.

Well, that was my excuse. The truth was I was discontented with our current place, a huge flat by many people’s standards. :(

But as God would have planned it, I decided to declutter the house the week leading up to the visit to my friend’s place. It was a rewarding but back breaking work. It took me 5 days to clear just the downstairs portion of our 2-storey maisonette. But I loved seeing empty shelves and the freedom to walk all over the house without tripping over boxes of stuff left in the living and entrance area coz there was simply no space to store them anywhere.

And as I was given a tour around the house by the proud owner :) I thought to myself. No, we really do not need a larger place. What I need is to be better organised, be a better steward of the things I have, be creative in coming up with storage solutions and learn to stop acquiring stuff!

Yes, this acquiring of stuff is the downfall of many of us. No matter how large a place we have, the tendency is to fill it up with stuff. But there isn’t a house large enough anywhere to contain stuff.

The larger a house I have, the more things and more areas I have to declutter! What a horrifying thought!

And if the Lord allows us to see our children grow up, leave the family to start their own families, then guess who would be left to handle that huge house all by herself? Yikes!

The 3 yr old

The 3yr old has been making us smile with all her cute expressions – facial and verbal and her singing and dancing.

Some of the sweet things and funnies she has said recently include :

1. 3yr old : Mama, is this lunch or dinner?

Mama : Lunch.

3yr old : Thank you mama for cooking lunch!

2. Then at a wedding where the bride wore a dress with a low cut back (to the waist) which was covered in a chiffon/gauze material.

She stared intently at the bride while the pastor was giving his sermon and proclaimed loudly to me :

3yr old : Mama! The bride is naked!

Mama (whispering loudly) : Shhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! She is not!

3 yr old still staring intently : She is, mama! She ISSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!

I had to hurriedly hold her hand (I was carrying the baby) and lead her to the other eide of the room!

3. Enamoured with her daddy’s iPhone () she has taken to trying to work my Nokia and laptop in the same way. She does not understand why mama’s phone doesn’t respond to her touch :)

4. And almost completely toilet trained (she occasionally has accidents in the night and she has a quirky habit of needing to wear her Happy Heinys diaper to bed) she decided that she’s also independent enough to wipe herself after her big business. Oh my! It was disastrous! And she only told me what she did after she sat on my bed that had freshly laundered sheets!
4. And she loves doing school! She asks me daily – including on Saturdays – if she could do school. Before I even finish my breakfast, she would be getting her books and colour pencils, scissors and glue all ready!
5. But she’s terrorised by the 17 mth old who loves to bite her. :( And yet to see them play together is so, so sweet.
6. And I love how she goes to sleep willingly when I tell her to, so unlike her 17mth old sister. Grrr!!!!!
I love my 3 yr old! :D

A reminder…

Sorry to sound like a nag ….

This is a reminder that the new URL for Building Up Moms is now

http://BuildingUpMoms.WordPress.com

I have given up trying to sort out the technicalities with the domain host. Despite having renewed the cost for the use of the domain name I still can’t get it to work :( Anyhow, could you please pass the word around if you know of friends who have visited the site and found it helpful that the URL has changed.

Thanks heaps!

Diary of Pregnancy #7 – Week 34 & counting

Today’s checkup was really fast…and boring! if I may say so. I tried to get dr to see me in 4 weeks’ time after the 32wk appt but he said no. :(

I was in and out of the clinic in 15 minutes! Including the time taken for the pee test, weighing, measuring of blood pressure and payment! Then I spent the next 15 minutes waiting for the car at the wonderful TMC carpark! I really dislike that carpark! I used to take a bus there and back just to avoid parking there. But today, I was too hot and too tired to bother. Boy! Did I regret it!

I am seriously thinking of skipping the next appt at week 36! But then I had a thot – to make it all worthwhile, I should just schedule a time-out for myself after that! Afterall, dh is already home babysitting the kids. What’s another 2 hrs of babysitting them, eh? :)

We’ll see if I can work something out. It would mean some time (4 weeks only actually!) to be by myself for about 2hrs each time, before I am on call 24/7 again for the next 1.5yrs at least!
